An
internship at the VCDS provides students with an opportunity to gain a
broad understanding of the role that alternative dispute resolution
plays in our legal community. This internship is interesting in that
there are many cases encompassing a wide variety of topics and
disagreements.
After an orientation of the historical and
procedural aspects of the Center, interns begin the process of intake,
the preliminary step to dispute resolution. Interns are thereafter
instructed on how to handle conciliations over the telephone and also
given the opportunity to handle certain debt collection conciliations in
the office.
Throughout the internship process, VCDS interns are
encouraged and required to observe as many mediations as possible to
understand the process. In addition, opportunities also occasionally
arise that require research and reports on issues that affect ADR both
in our local community and throughout the country. These opportunities
can be handled by interns outside the office.
An internship
opportunity at the VCDS also provides tremendous networking
opportunities with other mediators, attorneys, and local legal resources
including facets of the Ventura County Bar Association and the County
Self-Help Centers.
